How to retain and attract top talent

It’s easier than you think.

Did you know it costs between 6 and 9 months of a person’s salary when they quit? Multiply this if more people follow and turnover contagion occurs. Expect great stress and costs!

October is ADHD Awareness Month, and I have something fascinating to share that will leave your team and colleagues happier at work.

I recently created a poll and shared it on LinkedIn and with you here. I did not share this poll with my ADHD Wise Squirrels podcast and Substack subscribers because I knew their votes would be biased.

My question was simple.

Picture yourself at work or in a recent job. The following changes were just implemented.

  • Dedicated quiet zones or desks positioned away from high-traffic areas

  • Warm desk lamps, dimmers, or soft light covers in place of overhead fluorescents

  • Remote and hybrid work options

  • Noise-canceling headphones

  • Written task lists, visual checklists, and project management boards alongside verbal instructions

  • Meeting agendas distributed 24 hours in advance

  • Written post-meeting action items

  • Direct, explicit feedback during performance reviews

  • Staggered start and end times

  • Designated meeting-free days or focus blocks

  • Short, flexible micro-breaks throughout the workday

  • Text-to-speech and speech-to-text software

  • Focus timers and mind-mapping software

  • Peer mentorship programs and job coaching

The poll answer options were:

  • I would love this!

  • I’d like it.

  • I’d feel the same as I do now.

  • I’d dislike this.

As a late-diagnosed ADHD person (whom I affectionately call a “Wise Squirrel”) and professional communication coach, I’ve had the notion that implementing accommodations for neurodivergent team members would be loved by all of your staff, regardless of their neurotype. I thought right!

Hardly a scientific study, but I had 37 respondents, and their answers were revealing but not surprising to me.

  • 68% said they would love the changes

  • 24% said they’d like it.

  • That’s 92% positive!

  • 8% were indifferent; they’d feel the same. No changes.

  • 0% said they’d dislike it. Zero, zilch, nada, nobody.

The conclusion is clear…

Implement accommodations at work for all your people, and you’ll improve your culture. Improve your culture, and you’ll attract and retain the best people. Retain talent, save money, and protect your peace of mind.

It’s a no-brainer, right? Don’t just do this for a few people; do it for everyone. Happy ADHD Awareness Month. I’m offering complimentary Good Fit coaching sessions for everyone today.

Book yours and let’s see if I can help you. I have a feeling I can.
